Global Traditional Music in Minnesota!
www.mnglobalarts.org
Minnesota Global Arts Institute was formed to celebrate and strengthen the global performing arts in Minnesota, with a special emphasis on the artists working and living here. MGAI also affirms the value of diversity in Minnesota, encourages cross-cultural understanding and community building through the arts and seeks to educate and expand audiences for the global performing arts in Minnesota.
What we do: - Research projects: field work & documentation - work with presenters (concerts and series collaborations) - occasional producing of events - bringing in master musicians to train and perform with local musicians - facilitate artist empowerment - Virtual Global Conservatory: Online Listings of world music teachers & training programs - World Music Event Web Calendar - MN Global Musician Directory
MGA has an e-mail list service which promotes Twin Cities performing arts events in the traditions of the Near East (North Africa, the Levant, Central Asia, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian subcontinent.) To sign up send us an email!
Participating artists, so far, represent traditions of Mexico, France, Cambodia, Iran, Ireland, American bluegrass, Trinidad, Malaysia, Israel, Argentina, Germany, South India and Egypt.
MGA’s first 2 years of programming have focused on music of the Near East because its founder, Miriam Gerberg, performs music from that region, but it will ultimately offer support and programs in all the worlds regions represented in Minnesota.
Grant funds for programming were received from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council from an appropriation by the Minnesota Legislature and funds from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the NEA. Additional funding support have been received from St. Paul's COMPAS's Community Arts Program with funds from the McKnight Foundation.
